The Machiavellian Intelligence hypothesis
The Machiavellian Intelligence hypothesis (see Carl Zimmer's blog) theorizes that monkeys and apes (and to an exaggerated extent, humans) have a higher brain-to-body ratio so that we can deceive each other.
